Personal Electronic Device (PED) Policy
Technology in the classroom is used to support learning. Grade 4-6 students bringing their own devices need to use them in a responsible and respectful way in accordance with CBE policy and the Privacy Laws of Alberta.
Responsible use of any device will be at the teacher’s discretion during classes, that is, teachers need to give students permission to use the devices within the classroom environment.
PED is the responsibility of the student who owns it. It is expected that a student’s personal device is used only by that student and not shared with others. It is the responsibility of the student/parent if a device is lost, stolen or damaged.
Parents, please do not call or text your child directly during class time. It is imperative that communications during the school day goes through the office in order that students can access support.
Here are a few examples of what is allowed and what is not:
Allowed with Teacher's Permission | Not Allowed at Anytime |
|---|---|
Listening to music while completing school work. (only allowed if it helps with focus) | Taking pictures and videos |
Google Apps for school work | Any use of the device outside of the classroom (e.g. hallway, lunch & recess) |
Reminders / Calendar | Using Social Media (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc.) |
Educational Apps to support learning | Texting or making phone calls |
Effective research | Constantly changing songs and sharing music with friends |
Playing games | |
Off-topic research |
Teachers and Administration reserve the right to decide if a PED is being used inappropriately.
Digital Citizenship at the CBE
Digital citizenship is about using technology and participating in digital environments. It is key to helping our students learn to use available technology responsibly in the classroom and beyond. Our school has a Digital Citizenship Plan that is updated annually, addressing how we work to build a community where we live and work together as digital citizens.
Visit the CBE website to learn more about how we support students to develop online safety skills and be good digital citizens.
Personal Mobile Devices
Student personal mobile devices are limited or restricted at all schools, unless required for health or medical needs, to support specialized learning needs, and for educational purposes. Learn more about our BYOD (bring your own device) rules.
Web Filtering & Social Media
Inappropriate or unsafe content may be blocked to provide a safe environment: some content is blocked for all users, and other content may be suitable for older students but not for younger ones. Student access to known social media platforms is blocked on school networks and school devices for all grade levels.
