Despite the weather, we have had a great week at Deer Run School! Our grade one classes spent Wednesday at the Calgary Farmyard learning about spring on the farm. Thank you to the volunteers for persevering through the less than ideal weather conditions.
Grade 6 classes hosted a mock City Council meeting in their rooms on Friday, complete with a mayor, city councillors and city administration. They debated the Single Use Items bylaw. Students presented well thought through points of view, as they outlined their reasons why they were in support or not in support of the proposed bylaw. It was great to see students who are normally quiet observers speak with confidence as they presented their ideas.
As usual, we gathered for our Friday assembly. These assemblies take place every Friday at 10:00AM and families are always welcome to join us! This week’s assembly focused on “discoveries”. We were treated to two dance performances from grade 5 students, a student and teacher “skip off” and prizes were handed out for Jump Rope for Heart. The most exciting discovery was shared by a grade 2 student who found a fossilized shark tooth in her garden, right here in Deer Run. This was verified to be an actual tooth by the staff at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Who knows what else we might did up here in Deer Run!
Today was popcorn day at DRS. Thank you to the popcorn volunteers! We so appreciate your time. Our last popcorn day of the year will be held on June 14, 2024.
It is hard to believe that we are already entering the last week of May. We are busy making plans for next year. If you will not be attending Deer Run School next year (this does not apply to grade 6 families), please email us at deerrun@cbe.ab.ca detailing your plans. We can help you get the appropriate paperwork completed.
Have a great weekend,
Shawna, James and the Deer Run Team
Jump Rope for Heart
Deer Run School has set a goal to raise $500 for Jump Rope for Heart, by the end of May. If we make our goal, Ms. Weir and Mr. Miller have agreed to take a pie to the face in celebration at one of our weekly assemblies! We have currently raised $348. Students are asked to bring in a toonie to support the cause. If each student brings in a toonie, we will have easily surpass our goal. Each toonie also buys a ballot to be entered in for Jump Rope for Heart prizes.
Bike Repair Day
A long standing tradition at Deer Run School has been Bike Repair Day! On Wednesday May 29, 2024, all students are invited to ride their bikes to school. Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Calgary will be on site offering bike repairs/tune ups to any students in need. Student should bring a lock to school so that bikes can be secured on one of our outdoor racks. If a student does not have a lock, we will store unsecured bikes in the gym for the day. Students and their family members are reminded that ALL bikes/scooters need to be walked on school grounds.
