Orange Shirt Day

Dear Deer Run Families,

Today, our school community came together to honour Orange Shirt Day and recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Throughout the day, students participated in learning experiences that helped deepen their understanding of the histories, cultures, and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in Canada.

This morning, we gathered as a whole school for an assembly focused on the significance of Orange Shirt Day. Students learned about the story behind the orange shirt and its connection to Phyllis Webstad's experience at residential school. Orange Shirt Day serves as a reminder that Every Child Matters and encourages all of us to reflect on the lasting impacts of residential schools while working toward truth, understanding, and reconciliation.

Many classes also spent time learning on the land today. Through outdoor learning experiences, students connected with the natural environment, and explored the importance of our relationship with the land.

At Deer Run School, our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation extends beyond a single day. Throughout this school year, our staff and students will continue to engage in learning that:
